The days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping, and with a bit of luck, the first snowflakes will soon start falling. Winter is just around the corner, and of course, Christmas is an essential part of the season. While the trees and plants outside may look bare, that doesn’t mean you can’t bring some greenery indoors. To help you with this, we’ve put together a list of our favorite Christmas flowers and plants.

Amaryllis

A flower that certainly deserves a spot in our selection is the Amaryllis. Originating from South Africa, this versatile bloom comes in various shapes and sizes. We often use it in bouquets, but even as a standalone bulb, it’s worth showcasing. The fun part is that you can buy an Amaryllis bulb in a festive Christmas color and watch it grow and bloom a little more each day. This way, you can bring a touch of South African charm into your home during the dark winter months.

Ilex

The next on our list comes with an interesting backstory. The berries of the Ilex branch have a unique history. Native to the United States, the berries were originally used as medicine by Indigenous peoples. However, be cautious—they can cause nausea and low blood pressure if ingested. That’s why we prefer to use them decoratively. Our tip: keep it simple. A few Ilex branches in a vase are already stunning on their own.

Christmas Rose

The Christmas rose is another must-have on our list. This beautiful flower brings light colors into the dark days of winter, typically white or pink. Here’s a fun fact: its roots can be dried and ground to create a sneezing powder. However, we recommend admiring its stunning appearance in a lovely winter bouquet instead.

Poinsettia

The poinsettia originates from Mexico, where it is known as a biblical plant. According to legend, when Christ was born, a poor child wanted to create a gift for his birth. Lacking money, the child gathered weeds and fashioned them into a small bouquet. In church, the bouquet miraculously transformed into the vibrant poinsettia. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s a heartwarming story. During Christmas, this beautiful plant brings a little light into your home.

Mistletoe

We’re not encouraging you to kiss the first person you see under the mistletoe, but this Christmas plant is undeniably beautiful. Native to Europe, mistletoe is a semi-parasite that grows on trees, drawing water and minerals from them. Although it has been protected in the Netherlands since 2017, it is cultivated in abundance, making it a popular addition to many Christmas arrangements.

These festive flowers and plants are sure to brighten your home and bring a touch of nature indoors during the holiday season!
