A vase decides how a bouquet stands. Get the height wrong and long stems fall open. Get the neck wrong and a loose bunch collapses into the glass. Most of what follows is about matching the shape to what you plan to put in it.

Which size vase do you need?

One rule holds up: the vase is roughly half the height of the finished arrangement. A bouquet on 60 centimetre stems wants about 30 centimetres of vase.

A large vase suits long stems, branches and hydrangea. A round bolvase with a narrow neck holds a small bunch upright without any arranging at all. If you own one vase, own that one.

Glass, ceramic or crystal?

Glass shows the stems. That is the point with tulips and single-variety bunches, and a problem with a mixed bouquet whose stem ends are less tidy. Coloured and lustre glass hides that.

Ceramic is opaque and heavier, so it carries a top-heavy arrangement without tipping. Crystal is for the vase that stays out all year. Mouth-blown pieces carry small irregularities in the wall, which is how you tell them from machine-made glass.

Colour and shape

A black vase makes pale flowers read louder. A white vase does the opposite and leaves the colour to the flowers. A transparent vase disappears, which is why it is the safe one to give away.

Our shapes run from the Pear and the Sfera to the Oblique and the Anfora. Bubble and Bolvase are round. Parma and Turin are straighter, closer to a cylinder.

The makers we carry

The largest part of the collection is Fidrio, blown by hand in the Netherlands. Polspotten is bolder and more graphic. Henry Dean works in soft, smoky colour.

At the other end sit our 3D printed vases and the Miniral crystal series, both small collections and both quite unlike the rest.

Buying a vase

You can order any vase here, on its own or alongside a bouquet. Most of ours are still chosen in person, because weight and colour do not photograph well. The full range stands out at our Flagship Store on the Gelderlandplein in Amsterdam.

Ordered online, a vase ships Monday to Friday in the Netherlands, Flanders and Brussels. Shipping is EUR 7,00 in the Netherlands and we drop it from EUR 50. In Flanders and Brussels it is EUR 9,95, dropped from EUR 75.
