The Amaryllis Plant: A True Christmas Flower

The amaryllis plant is the ultimate Christmas flower. With its large blooms on tall stems, it is a real eye-catcher. You’ll mostly see amaryllis flowers during the winter months, as it has become one of the most popular flowers of the season. Originally, the amaryllis plant comes from the Caribbean, South America, and Central America.

Colors and Features of the Amaryllis

Amaryllis flowers come in many different colors, including white, red, orange, pink, yellow, and salmon pink. On average, four to six petals grow on this stunning plant. At first glance, the amaryllis bulb might not look very impressive. But that’s exactly what makes it such an extraordinary flower in our eyes!

The question, of course, is how to get this beautiful amaryllis bulb to bloom. Don’t worry—we’ll teach you how! This way, you can enjoy one of Daily Flowers’ favorite blooms.

How to Care for a Wax Amaryllis Bulb

It’s important to start with a waxed amaryllis bulb. If you have a regular amaryllis bulb, it will need to be planted in soil. But the beauty of waxed amaryllis bulbs is that there’s no need for soil or planting!

Waxed amaryllis bulbs come in a variety of colors, including red, white, and burgundy, with or without glitter. The options are endless! A waxed amaryllis bulb is already a work of art on its own, but the most beautiful part is yet to come—and it requires no effort.

Simply place the amaryllis bulb in a bright location, and the magic will begin. The bulb is equipped with everything it needs to grow, so you won’t even need to water it. Just make sure the room isn’t too cold; a room temperature of around 21 degrees Celsius (70°F) is perfect.

One of the joys of the waxed amaryllis bulb is watching it grow day by day. What many people forget, however, is to rotate the bulb about a quarter turn every two to three days. This ensures that the amaryllis grows straight.

Reusing Waxed Amaryllis Bulbs

Many people wonder if they can reuse the waxed amaryllis bulb next year. Unfortunately, that’s not possible. The bulb grows so beautifully and rapidly that it only works once. But next year, you can try a different color!

TIP!

Waxed amaryllis bulbs are available in our Daily Flowers vending machine at Hoog Catharijne Utrecht. The machine is refrigerated, so the waxed amaryllis bulbs won’t start blooming until you bring them home.

Enjoy the wonder of the amaryllis this holiday season!
