What to give for a new home

Flowers work on the day itself because they need nothing but water and they make one corner of a chaotic house look finished. That is the whole job.

Objects work better a few weeks later, once the furniture has landed and there is a shelf to put something on. If you are invited to the housewarming itself, bring flowers. If you are sending something after the move, an object is the better call.

A vase is the safest object

Nobody moving house owns enough vases, and the ones they do own are packed. A vase is useful on the day and every time someone else brings flowers over the following month.

A candle is the second safe answer, because it takes up no permanent space and it covers the smell of fresh paint. Both are neutral enough to give to a colleague and personal enough to give to a friend.

How much to spend

For a colleague or a neighbour, a bouquet on its own is right and anything more becomes awkward to accept. For a close friend or family, flowers plus one object is the pairing that reads as considered without being a burden.

Skip anything that has to match an interior you have not seen. Colour choices in someone else's new house are a gamble, which is why flowers and clear glass keep winning.

Absolutely Amazing Flowers is the default and hard to get wrong. Bright Sunshine and Le Soleil are the yellow ones, which suit a first flat. Ciao Bella and Dolce Vita arrive with their own vase, so there is nothing to find in a box.

Wonderfully Wild suits someone who has moved out of the city. A coloured orchid lasts months rather than days and is the one to send when you know the move was a long time coming.

Ordering and delivery

We deliver Monday to Friday in the Netherlands, Flanders and Brussels. Orders placed before 09:00 arrive the same day. Shipping is EUR 7,00 in the Netherlands and we drop it from EUR 50. In Flanders and Brussels it is EUR 9,95, dropped from EUR 75.

At weekends our own couriers take over and the cut-off moves to 10:00. Around Amsterdam and Utrecht we charge nothing, elsewhere in the Randstad it is EUR 9,95.
