Few things are more beautiful than fresh flowers on a summer day, and few things wilt faster when the weather turns warm. A little extra care goes a long way. Here's how to keep your bouquet at its best, even when the thermometer climbs.
Flowers drink more in summer. Refill the vase every day, and fully change the water every two days. Cool water, never warm, slows the natural aging of the stems and keeps your bouquet looking fresh for longer.
Each time you change the water, trim the stems by about two centimeters at a sharp angle. The angled cut gives the flower more surface area to drink from, which matters more in heat than at any other time of year.
Direct sunlight, radiators, the top of the fridge, near the stove: all bouquet enemies. Place your flowers in the coolest, most stable spot you have. A shaded corner of the kitchen or the entryway is usually ideal.
Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which speeds up the aging of nearby flowers. As lovely as it looks, keep your bouquet at least a meter away from any bowl of apples, peaches, or bananas.
Move your flowers somewhere cool overnight, like a hallway or even a covered terrace. Those quiet, lower-temperature hours can add days to the life of your bouquet.
